The Peace Room: Our Peace Room at St. Malachy is a space within our building for students to work through difficult emotions and challenging situations with the help of a trusted adult. Within the Peace Room space, students can learn or utilize coping strategies, work through a situation or conflict, calm down, or relieve stress, develop coping strategies, work through a situation with peers and/or resolve a conflict they had with a classmate or a teacher. The Peace Room also serves as a hub for restorative practices and interventions such as Peace Talks, Restorative Conversations, and Mediations.
At times, a students’ feelings related to social development, emotional distress, or experiences of trauma become overpowering. In these times, a student can utilize the Peace Room to work through difficult emotions and challenging situations, with the goal of returning to learning as quickly and productively as possible. Students can request a pass to the peace room, or a teacher can refer a student to the peace room.
Our Behavior, Emotional, Social, and Trauma (BEST) team is housed in the Peace Room. This includes our Guidance Counselor, our Family Connections Liaison, as well as additional staff and faculty members who support the Peace Room in various ways throughout the day. When a student arrives in the Peace Room, they are signed in with their name, date, arrival time, and reason for visit. Students have 10-15 minutes to reflect and self-regulate, unless the adult in the peace room determines they need more time and they would then communicate this to the teacher.
Depending on the situation, students choose their coping strategy from options such as; breathing strategies, creative strategies, movement strategies, sensory strategies, or talking strategies. Once the 15 minutes are over, the students reflect and then return to class.
